Being a part of a throwaway society, something about our baby things tells us to hang on to them. In spite of that, while you are carrying your baby, many people will be lining up to share their used furniture from their nurseries and their old crib bedding. Since babies are a costly undertaking, be thankful for this selection of cribs and bedding for infants. First verify whether the bedding is safe. Then you may use it for the child.
Whatever you decide, a Moses basket or crib, the first bed belonging to your baby will no doubt be something special and a keepsake. The best time to check a crib for its safety is when you are given a hand-me-down crib and you are spending some time refinishing it. You may have new looking bedding and crib, but you must always check them for safety purposes. An old wicker cradle can be beautiful to look at but check for safety as there may be loose or broken bits of wood, and some joints can become loose or weakened from age; we also would recommend that you replace the mattress with a new one. The baby might shove loose threads or pieces of material into his mouth, so when fitting the skirt make sure to remove them.
When you are putting up new drapes, check to see that there are no loose threads or dangling material that a baby might be able to get a hold of and put in his/her mouth. Juvenile Products Manufacturer’s Association (JPMA) and British Standards (BS) recommend new bedding for baby’s crib as a safety precaution. The JPMA seal of approval or the BS ‘Kite’ mark are shown on products that have been safety tested and meet the requirements.
Secondhand items are perfectly reasonable as long as you’re sure that the items are safe. It’s always a good idea to recycle, even items like nursery furniture and baby bedding. As your baby will spend quite a good time in the crib, it is worth spending time on it to see whether it is safe and comfortable. Here are some things to keep in mind when inspecting the safety of your baby equipment. To start with, make certain that the crib does not have flaky, loose, or poisonous lead paint and that there are no snags on which baby’s clothes might ensnare. Most importantly check the bars of the crib to assure that they are closer than 2 3/8 inches apart. The header and footer boards need to be solid having no holes, this will protect your infant from getting his/her head caught. To prevent the crib from wobbling, I would check all connections, screws and make sure that all the pieces are in place. Then go around the crib and double check again. It should only take one hand to raise and lower the side rail. Once raised, it should be fully secured. 22 inches is the height recommended for the top of the side rail to extend over the crib mattress, and for heavens sake make sure the mattress is not only firm but clean.
I think it is important that each new baby should get a new mattress, but make sure the mattress fits well in the crib before buying. Nursery bedding can be dangerous so it is important to make sure that all the bumpers strings are tied down or just remove the bumper completely. Don’t use comforters, quilts or other heavy bedding for babies that are under a year old since this can cause overheating. Keep a thermometer in the room, and try a mixture of blankets and sheets. Babies are very quick little creatures, take climbing for example, before you know it they will have mastered the talent, that is why one should keep cords, lamps, window blinds/curtains and other pieces of furniture out of reach of the crib.
You can have a wonderful time with your baby that is growing fast.
