There are very few societies on earth that do not have performances of some kind. Theatres have provided the venue for cultures to be dramatic then and now. Storytelling is a part of the human experience.
Ancient cultures from different continents, like Greek, Egyptians, and Asians, had dramatic shows. There is evidence of stages that were home to the dramas and comedies of the day. Outdoor performance areas built with stones still exist today for tourists to visit. Artifacts of the actual performances that took place on such stages have also been preserved.
In modern culture, the entertainment industry has gone from an outdoor arena to playhouses all over the city. Live shows are performed in these halls. The shows can be simple sets with a few actors to mechanical props and musical numbers. Small towns may just have one playhouse where a big city can have a hundred or more such auditoriums.
In larger cities that have many locations for live shows, the performances can be divided up into types. One auditorium may only show performances for children. Another playhouse may have a cultural focus. The locations can be inside or outside, as in an amphitheater.
The most popular of these buildings for performance are movie houses. Even the smallest of towns has at least one cinema. The cities and suburbs have movie complexes that show twenty or more movies at once. Watching movies is a common pastime for people living in this era. Although, many movies can be viewed at home on the television, the importance of the theater going experience is evidenced by where the movies are originally released to the public.
Not all of the movie houses are the same either. The drive-ins are outdoors. There are the discount ones that show previously released movies for a small price. Some places only show kid’s movies. Sometimes a park area in the community is converted by raising a giant screen for a special showing of a movie. Many of them have a snack bar that sells concessions outside of the screens. Some even have food served at tables during the show.
The construction is almost as varied as the types of shows. Some halls have the seats on the same level while most have a sloped floor. There are balconies in some buildings. Occasionally, in a playhouse, the stage may be in the center with the seats surrounding it. Most places that hold live shows have the stage in front of the audience with an area behind the stage for cast and crew.
A mainstay in human civilizations is theatres. People enjoy going to a place where they can be entertained by someone else’s story. The buildings that house these performances come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The types of shows are even more varied. The evolution of the arenas has gone from the ancient stone structures to the multiplexes of today. What will the stage of the future look like?
